Is Social Media Really Good for Us?

What’s a topic or issue about which you’ve changed your mind?

When I first joined social media back in 2009, it felt exciting. I started with Facebook, and it was fun. All my friends were there—we shared photos, stories, and laughter. It felt like a community, almost like a family. Instagram was the same. I loved scrolling through photos, getting inspired, and feeling connected.

Back then, there were no ads cluttering the screen, no endless reels pulling you in. It was simple, joyful, and creative.

But over the years, my view has changed. Social media today feels more like a riddle full of ads than a place to connect. Posts from friends are buried under sponsored content. I often see more depressing news than inspiration. I scroll less now because it leaves me feeling drained instead of uplifted.

I’ve also realized that all of these platforms—whether it’s Facebook, Instagram, or even newer ones like Substack—are really just rented spaces. We don’t own them. They can change the rules anytime, use our data however they choose, and we have little say in it.

So the question becomes: how do we find balance with social media? I don’t have all the answers yet. What I do know is that I use it less than I used to, and I miss the days when it felt more personal and real.

Still, I believe you can find your community. Maybe it’s not on Facebook or Instagram. Maybe it’s here on WordPress, through daily prompts or writing groups. Wherever it is, I hope it feels authentic and supportive—because that’s what matters most.
